WWIGO..ditch the webcam, use your cellphone instead

by Amit Ranjan on Mar 18, 2007

Motvik, a four member mobile startup in Bangalore has launched a very interesting product called WWIGO (pronounced ‘vigo’). WWIGO stands for ‘Webcam Wherever I Go’ and it turns your Bluetooth enabled camera phone into a wireless webcam for use with your laptop or desktop. Motvik is led by Rajan, who needs no introduction to many amongst us, for he is a very familiar face on the startup/unconference circuits in Hyderabad & Bangalore.

motvik.jpgWWIGO is essentially a software solution. It is a combination of PC & Mobile software. You have to download it from the website and install one component on the mobile, and the other on your PC. Once installed, the camera phone functions as a wireless webcam, using Bluetooth connectivity to transmit live video signals to your PC. The video can be used as an input into various PC applications- IM clients like Yahoo/Skype for video messaging, video capture; editing software like Windows Movie Maker; online video sharing applications like YouTube. The snapshot on the left shows how WWIGO works– it shows a visual captured from the mobile and then beamed onto the PC.

Since mobilephones have now become a 24X7 extension of your very being, WWIGO offers users an anywhere/anytime webcam in their pockets. The Bluetooth connectivity frees you from the constraints of a wired attachment to the PC/Laptop. Currently WWIGO is available on the Windows platform (XP & 2000) and Symbian Series 60 phones (6600, N Series etc). Support for other models and platforms are being added.

WWIGO is currently in private Alpha. They are looking for people to test their application and give them feedback, so in case anybody is game, write to rajan@motvik.com

    @Amit,

    Thanks for writing about wwigo & Motvik!

    @Alex,
    You are right few others have developed simillar products which includes mobiola and others like ateksoft, we want to differentiated focus on making the product more accessible and usable. Do stay tuned for more differentiating features as well.

    Let me know what you are looking for in terms of RoI. My email id is rajan@motvik.com and we can discuss over email.

    Cheers,
    Rajan

    Well ROI is Return of Investment. For anything to be sustainable in the long run there should be some kind of returns.
    So how will you cover the costs incurred in the development and maintainance of the product.

    Rajan,

    Some pointers to future monetization strategy would certaily help.

    Alex,

    For an application like this, if it works and works really well without much hassles, thats a good point to start off with. In that sense Rajan is right that usability can be a differentiator.

    Also, Warelex that you pointed out, is paid software, while WWIGO is free. So thats another difference.

    Amit

    @Alex,

    :) Yup RoI is Return on Investments and yes you are right one needs returns to be sustainable.

    @Amit/Alex,

    We are strongly looking at a ‘flickr’ (’freemium’) kind of monetization model. Hope that helps !!

    Cheers,
    Rajan
