This is kind of funny. I received a spam SMS (see below) a couple of days back… What does it say ? “Get a 15 page dynamic website built just for Rs 4K.. along with this, you get 100 free SMS”. The sender is a Delhi based website development company by the name of PelSoftLabs. Nothing wrong in this except (a) it is spam and, (b) the 100 SMS free is cheezy…. puts you off.

This SMS actually stirred something inside me. All of us who are working on the web- web 2.0, 1.0, 3.0…. whatever- we are all building websites, correct? Off course technically websites have evolved into full blow applications & webservices, but still it is but a website. Think search engines, video sharing, image sharing, enterprise applications, static or dynamic, big or small – they are all websites. Hard to argue against that.
I have frequently been confronted with this question in my own context. Prior to SlideShare, I essentially had a not IT/software background, hence most of my former friends, colleagues and acquaintances are from the brick & mortar (non tech) sectors. And the vast majority of them are still JUSTABOUT exposed to the internet… the term Web 2.0 is virtually unheard of (I am yet to meet anyone from that group who is aware of this term and/or understands what it means). So whenever I get talking with those folks and have to explain what I am upto currently, I start out explaining startups, web2.0 et al… almost always, this draws blank faces….and so finally I have to come down to “..we are building a website that allows you to blah, blah, blah….. “. And thats where the above SMS comes into picture.
It may sound circa 2001, but for the vast majority of Indians, the internet is synonymous with websites. And Web 2.0 is quite so elitist (read tech workforce oriented).
But this will change… slowly but surely.

Yes, I recognize that one. Spam it is. I’ve been receiving it for more than a year now.
Hi Amit
I googled for pel soft and saw their web site..could not find any such product offering…
Hi Amit..if you were not in software earlier ..its really amazing how you got idea of slideshare and more importantly how you got the know how of idea execution..may be you can share with us in one of your posts pls?
Amit,
If the change that you mention needs to come about, then first there’s got to be a democratization process – development prices need to come down and the neighbourhood kirana store should be able to have a website of its own where it can accept orders – cheap but functional, primitive (think web 0.5) but web nonetheless !
