Why is L K Advani spamming me?

by Amit Ranjan on February 1, 2009

Because it is election time, I guess. As the snapshot below indicates, the email emphasizes that L K Advani is “BJP-NDA’s prime-ministerial candidate“. Also not to be missed is “India’s largest political portal“, which indicates BJP’s keeness to project itself as a internet savvy political force. Maybe they are taking a few cues from Obama’s successful outreach to American citizens over the web, which many political commentators have regarded as being one of the turning points in the elections (it helped greatly in raising donations/funds for the campaign).

Something to note: the email is from LK Advani’s communication office, and not some random person inviting you to check out the website, indicating that this is part of a mass mailer campaign. This campaign must be a follow-up to the launch of the L K Advani’s website and his blog.

I think in the forthcoming Lok Sabha election, we are going to see all major political parties get on to the internet bandwagon. During the Delhi state elections last November, V K Malhotra (again from BJP) had a twitter account that was used to reach out to voters on the web.

I googled around for a few minutes for other politicians using the web/internet. Here’s a sampler

- Lalu Prasad Yadav’s blog is hosted on mypopkorn.com but does not seem to be active at present.
- the Congress party has a website called CongressMedia, ostensibly for “connecting with the congress”

On a related note, let me share this slide deck form Rajesh Jain (emergic, netcore) about why he is supporting the BJP in the next elections. Rajesh wrote a detailed post on his blog and that seems to have generated quite some heat. Check out the post here.

If you are receiving this mail, this is not a spam, it’s an unsolicitated email / wrongly sent to you instead of sending it to another person.

@indiainfo: Yes of course it’s wrongly sent. These things happen. Like only yesterday someone wrongly sent me a few emails about some non-genuine Rolex watches. By mistake, since I obviously did not know that person.

Similarly, another email I got mentioned some herbal medicine which will increase the impressiveness of my manhood and totally wow my girlfreind/wife/friends/parents. That too was accidental, because obviously:
1. I don’t know that guy
2. Everyone is already WOWed.

So let’s call a spade a spade and file it under SPAM.

Of course, it was only a matter of time before the moral police also started advertising on Google.

Part of the reason Obama’s internet campaign succeeded is because of the HUGE internet audience in US. I doubt replicating that here in India would have the same effect.

You missed Google ads, they’re spamming every second website with google ads on it has L K Advani’s ad.
nothing to do with politics but its annoying at times to see them.
Guess what I’ve added filter in my website which blocks LKAdvani’s ads. ;)

I would have appreciated had L.K.Advani simply blogged about things he liked and them indirectly passed on the message of support.

alternatively, it would have been a BJP mouthpiece that would hail the man as a prime ministerial candidate.

But what these mailers and google ads are doing is posing him as a prime ministerial candidate, which in essence is incorrect. There still is doubt about him becoming the prime minister if and when BJP gets a majority. he has a tough fight from Narendra Modi of Gujarat.

Also it is so un-humble (don’t know if there’s a word as that).
